# What is GTA roleplay — and how do you start?

## The idea

[Roleplay](https://thecity.gg/en/glossary/roleplay/) turns GTA into a shared, persistent city. You create a character, give them a job and a history, and stay [in character](https://thecity.gg/en/glossary/ic-ooc/) while other players do the same. The fun is in the stories that come out of it, not in winning.

## How it works today

All of this currently runs on GTA V for PC, mostly through [FiveM](https://thecity.gg/en/glossary/fivem/):

1. **Pick a server.** Our [directory](/en/roleplay/servers/) lets you filter by language, access type and RP style. Positions in it cannot be bought.
2. **Check the access type.** *Open* servers let you in immediately; a [Whitelist](https://thecity.gg/en/glossary/whitelist/) server wants an application first.
3. **Read the rules.** Every server has its own, but five concepts are universal: [RDM](https://thecity.gg/en/glossary/rdm/), [VDM](https://thecity.gg/en/glossary/vdm/), [Metagaming](https://thecity.gg/en/glossary/metagaming/), [Powergaming](https://thecity.gg/en/glossary/powergaming/) and [Fail RP](https://thecity.gg/en/glossary/fail-rp/). Learn these and you will avoid most bans.
4. **Start small.** A taxi driver with a good backstory is a better first character than a crime boss.
