GTA 6 Timeline: Every Announcement, Delay and Trailer So Far

Grand Theft Auto VI was confirmed in February 2022 and arrives on 19 November 2026. Between those points there were two delays, two trailers, a major leak and an employment tribunal that is still running.

This is the sequence, with what each date changed.

The timeline

4 February 2022 — Rockstar confirms GTA 6 is in active development. Before this, everything was rumour.

18 September 2022 — A hacker posts around 90 clips of early development footage, taken from Rockstar's internal systems. Rockstar confirms them genuine the next day. Every checkable detail in that material later proved accurate.

8 November 2023 — Rockstar announces the first trailer for early December.

4 December 2023 — Trailer 1 arrives a day ahead of schedule, after a low-quality version leaked roughly sixteen hours early. It reveals Vice City, the state of Leonida, Jason and Lucia, and a 2025 window with no month attached. The trailer takes 90,421,491 YouTube views in 24 hours and a Guinness World Record.

16 May 2024 — Take-Two narrows the window to Fall 2025. This is not a delay; it is the original target getting a month range. Every later slip is measured from here.

2 May 2025 — First delay. Fall 2025 becomes 26 May 2026.

6 May 2025 — Trailer 2 arrives four days after the delay announcement, taking 475 million views across all platforms in 24 hours. Rockstar told The Hollywood Reporter it was the biggest video launch of all time.

30 October 2025 — Rockstar dismisses 34 employees from its UK studios. The IWGB union accuses the company of firing workers to disrupt union organising. Rockstar rejects the allegations. Rallies are held outside the Edinburgh and London offices.

6 November 2025 — Second delay. 26 May 2026 becomes 19 November 2026. Announced on a quarterly earnings call, the same week as the union rallies.

25 June 2026 — Pre-orders open. Rockstar reveals the cover art, two editions, and more than 60 new screenshots.

27 August 2026 — Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premieres on Netflix. Twenty-six minutes of gameplay captured on PlayStation 5, positioned as the final major reveal before launch. It passes 31 million views within four days.

17 September 2026 — Rockstar announces GTA VI: The Album, 34 original tracks, out on launch day.

12 November 2026 — Preload opens at local midnight.

19 November 2026 — Release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Why did it take so long?

Thirteen years separate GTA V and GTA 6 — the largest gap between numbered entries in the series.

From official confirmation to release is four years and nine months. For comparison, GTA V took one year and nine months from announcement to launch, and Red Dead Redemption 2 took two years and one month.

Active development reportedly began in 2018, immediately after Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped, which would make it roughly eight years of work. That starting point comes from reporting rather than from Rockstar.

The commonly cited reasons are scale beyond anything the studio had attempted, pandemic disruption to production through 2020 and 2021, and technology pipelines that did not exist when GTA V launched. The 2022 leak added time too, through tightened internal security.

What do the two delays have in common?

Both were announced by Rockstar and Take-Two simultaneously, and both were timed to quarterly financial reporting rather than to a standalone announcement.

Both were also followed closely by good news. Trailer 2 landed four days after the first delay. The pattern is visible enough that it has become a reliable expectation among people who follow the release closely.

Will it move again?

Take-Two says no. CEO Strauss Zelnick has stated there will be no further delays, and the company has attached a revenue projection of around $8.2 billion to the date — which makes it an expensive thing to move.

That is not a guarantee. It is a commercial commitment, which is a different thing, but a meaningful one.

What is the employment tribunal about?

Rockstar dismissed 34 developers in October 2025. The company says former staff discussed confidential project details on a union-associated Discord server. The IWGB union says the dismissals were intended to break union organising. Rockstar rejects that and is contesting the case.

The tribunal has produced one unintended disclosure: in its own filings, Rockstar referred to an online 32-player format described as highly confidential — the first public acknowledgement that GTA 6 has an online component in development.

The final hearing was scheduled to run until at least 15 October 2026.

Who predicted the delays correctly?

Leaker Tom Henderson called the second delay in advance and was right. He is one of the few named sources in this space with a verifiable record.

Most predictions were not. Corsair's vice-president expected console in autumn and PC in early 2026; the console date moved twice past that. Multiple outlets predicted a third trailer in June 2026, then 6 August, then around the World Cup final. What arrived was a 26-minute Netflix presentation on 27 August — a format nobody predicted.
